Background of HAERDO
HAERDO is an independent, non-profit,
non-political Organization founded
by a Group of Somalis in the Diaspora
in 2001. Initially, the idea of
the group was to form a Yahoo
based email group to exchange
information and to share ideas
and ways to help communities back
home in Somaliland.
The Yahoo group, by the name of
Gaaroodi, was formally created
on August 2001 with the bulk of
group membership from the Diaspora
communities of Hargeisa and Hawd
in Europe, The Middle East and
North America.
During it’s email-based
existence, members regularly elected
the management of the group, who
ordinarily comprised of five members,
including a chairman and treasurer.
The management was responsible
for a variety of tasks specially
assigned to them by the members.
The group continued to help their
community for three years before
it was formally established as
an NGO called Horn of Africa Education
and Rural Development Org (HAERDO)
in 2004. HAERDO has its headquarters
in Hargeisa town, but has branch
offices in Salahley, district
of Somaliland.
As an organization, HAERDO is
unique in two Important ways.
It is unique in the sense that
it started out as a yahoo listserv
and continued to be so for two
years before it was territorially
established as a local non-governmental
organization. It is also unique
in that all its funds came from,
to date, the contribution of its
members spread over five continents.
HAERDO was established to participate
in and contribute to the development
initiatives of Hargeisa and Hawd
communities, particularly hit
hard by a series of civil wars
following the fall of the military
regime of Somalia in 1991, the
prolonged civil wars destroyed
the existing minimal infrastructures
and disrupted the provision of
the most basic social services
pushing large section of the population
into an abject poverty.
HAERDO sponsors community development
projects in the areas of health,
education, water and livestock.
The organization also contributes
to reducing environmental degradation
in its area of operation.
HAERDO is a member of COSONGO
(Consortium of Somaliland Non-governmental
organization) and is registered
in Somaliland both at the national
and regional levels, as a non-governmental
local organization.
